We have recently evaluated some of the new multiple antennae based access points that select the optimum antennae configurations from seven or more antennae and have found that the claims of increased throughput and range are borne out in practice. We have experienced speed improvements of 2x and range improvements of about 2.5x over single antennae access points.
An exciting new development is WiMax, another name for the 802.16 standard for wireless broadband, which has a range of up to 50 km and can deliver broadband at a theoretical maximum of 75 megabits per second, which is more than 20 times the speed of the fastest wired broadband available commercially
In April, Intel began shipping its PRO-Wireless 5116 chipset for mobile WiMax, which will likely be built into commercially available PCs by 2007.
